This article will teach you how to create a pipeline opportunity and update stage, value, and close date.
Deals represent revenue opportunities tied to an account — expected value, stage, and close date for forecasting. Updating stages as evidence arrives keeps leadership forecasts honest; stale mid-pipeline deals that never move distort the whole pipeline review.
Steps
- Open Deals from the CRM sidebar.
- Create a deal linked to the correct account.
- Set stage, expected value, and close date.
- Attach notes after customer meetings that change scope or timing.
- Update the stage when you have evidence (quote sent, verbal yes, PO pending).
- Close Won or Lost with a short note when the opportunity ends.
- If close date slips, move the date — do not leave an impossible past date on an open deal.
Conclusion & best practices
Stale mid-pipeline deals distort forecasts. If nothing moved for weeks, either advance the stage with evidence or push the close date. Lost deals deserve a reason code so product and pricing teams learn from patterns.
