This article will teach you what a DOT tire identification number is, and that Tire Base does not store or submit it for a recall registration.
A DOT registration is the tire identification number (TIN) molded on the sidewall. It starts with the letters DOT. Shops record that number with the buyer’s name and address so the tire manufacturer can reach the buyer if that tire is recalled. Tire Base does not have a field for this number on the work order, the invoice, or the product, and it does not send registrations to a manufacturer or to a registration company.
Steps
- Open the work order or invoice. Tire Base stores the customer, the tire, and the sale. It does not store a DOT tire identification number, and there is no Register DOT button.
- The number the shop means is on the tire sidewall. It identifies that exact tire so the manufacturer can notify the buyer in a recall.
- For a new tire sold in the United States, the independent dealer either gives the buyer a paper registration form with the full number and the shop name, or sends the buyer’s name and address, the full number, and the shop name to the tire manufacturer or that manufacturer’s registration company within 30 days. The buyer is not charged for the registration.
- Shops that register every brand in one place use a registration company such as CIMS or Tire Registration Plus. The shop pays that company. That subscription is not a Tire Base plan.
- Until this is in Tire Base, enter the sidewall number in that company’s own website, or use the paper form from the tire brand. Keep the buyer’s name and address on the Tire Base customer.
- If you want the number captured at checkout and sent to your registration company, tell Tire Base in this chat. We do not have that connection today.
Conclusion & best practices
Answer this directly. Tire Base does not register DOT numbers today. Do not say you are unsure, and do not describe a DOT screen that is not in the product. The shop can keep registering through the tire brand’s form or through their registration company.
