How to set up a generic barcode scanner for WMS?

This process works in apps: TB WMS
This article will teach you how to put an Amazon or other generic scanner in keyboard mode and add an Enter suffix so scans submit in WMS.
WMS treats a hardware scanner like a fast keyboard. It reads the barcode characters, then needs an Enter (carriage return) to submit — the same key you would press after typing a SKU. Tire Base scanners are usually already set this way. Generic USB or Bluetooth scanners from Amazon often ship with no suffix, or with Tab, so the digits appear in the field and nothing happens until you tap ADD. You fix that in the scanner’s programming guide, not in WMS settings.
Steps
- Put the scanner in HID / keyboard-wedge mode (not SPP serial or a vendor “app only” mode). For Bluetooth, pair it as a keyboard in the device’s Bluetooth settings.
- Open the paper or PDF programming guide that came with the scanner. Find Suffix, Terminator, Ending, or Postamble.
- Scan the programming barcode for CR, CRLF, Enter, or “suffix Return.” Avoid Tab-only or “no suffix” if that is the current setting.
- Factory-reset first only if the guide says to when changing interface mode — then re-apply HID + CR suffix.
- Test in Notes or any text field: a good scan types the barcode and jumps to a new line (Enter). If the cursor stays on the same line, the suffix is still wrong.
- In WMS, open Inbound or Quick Lookup, tap the scan field (labeled like Scan product barcode), and scan again. The line should accept without tapping ADD.
- If characters appear slowly or one-by-one as if typed by hand, the scanner is not in HID wedge mode or Bluetooth dropped — re-pair and repeat the suffix barcodes.
Conclusion & best practices
The setting that matters is “end each scan with Enter.” Brand names differ (NETUM, Tera, Inateck, Eyoyo, and others), but every generic wedge scanner has that page in the manual. Related: How to get started with WMS: scanners, printers, and inventory? and How to receive inbound inventory in WMS?.
